The society has a long association with composer Eric Wetherell, who was the Musical Director of the society from 2001 to 2015. He provided us with excellent reduced orchestral scores to be used with a small chamber orchestra that would fit neatly into the pit of the Redgrave Theatre. His scores, specially written for the Bristol Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society, use every note that appears in the original score and, with the clever use of instrumental combinations, produces the sound that you would find in a full orchestral version. This means that the level never swamps the singers, but is a warm, sympathetic and truthful realisation of Sullivan's music.
His scores have been hired out to more than a dozen light operatic societies within the UK. The Royal College of Music hired the score of Patience which they took to Paris for a performance in 2011 and a theatre company in Atlanta, Georgia, hired Eric's The Mikado in 2010.
If you wish to hire any of the reduced orchestrations for use with your school or operatic society, please see details on Eric's website: www.ericwetherell.co.uk
